Governor pays tribute to Rajbanshi leader


Kolkata, Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar today paid tributes to Rajbanshi leader Panchanan Barma. ‘Tributes to legendary Panchanan Barma, great Rajbanshi leader and social reformer on his death anniversary,’ he tweeted. ‘His stewardship in kshatriyazation movement among Rajbanshi community is well remembered. He effectively worked via Kshatriya Samity for Rajbonshi education promotion,’ Mr Dhankhar said.Born on February 13, 1866, Panchanan Barma, also known as Thakur Panchanan and Roy Saheb, was a Rajbanshi leader and reformer from Cooch Behar. He established a Kshatriya Sabh? to instill Brahminical values and practices in people of his own caste. Barma, born as Panchanan Sarkar, originally came from a jotedar family of Cooch Behar.
He died in Kolkata in 1935.
