India condoles loss of lives in Taiwan rail accident

New Delhi: India on Saturday condoled the loss of lives in the Taiwan rail accident which took place on Friday, killing 51 people and leaving over 150 people injured.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of so many lives in the railway accident in Taiwan. Our deepest condolences to the families. And our prayers for the early recovery of the injured,” Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said.

The accident, which is being termed as the deadliest rail tragedy in decades, took place at 0928 hrs local time (01:28 GMT) on Friday, when a train ferrying 490 passengers derailed inside a tunnel after apparently hitting a truck in Taiwan’s Hualien County.
