Indian men and women runners-up in freestyle in Asian Wrestling in Kazakhstan

Chandigarh: Iran wrestlers dominated the mats as they lifted the Greco-Roman as well as Freestyle team trophies in the 2021 Senior Asian Wrestling Championships at the Baluan Sholak Palace of Culture and Sports in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

In the Greco-Roman team championship, Iran collected 194 points and in Freestyle, they earned 179 points to take home the trophies. Kazakhstan were runners-up with 156 in Greco-Roman while Kyrgyzstan settled for the third position with 153 points. India could not garner any medal and was seventh in Greco-Roman.

In Freestyle Iran had a medal tally of three gold, three silver and two bronze medals. India finished runners-up with 151 points as they just managed to push Kazakhstan (149 points) to third position. India bagged one gold, two silver and four bronze medals while Kazakhstan claimed three gold medals and two silver medals.

Iran’s Hassan Yazdani claimed the gold medal in the 86 kg class freestyle as he outclassed Deepak Punia of India with third technical fall 10-0 in 2 minutes and 53 seconds.

Mongolia emerged champions in the women’s freestyle team championship with 173 points. India took a creditable runners-up slot with 168 points while Kazakhstan was third with 156 points.

Indian women picked up four gold, one silver and two bronze medals.
