Indian women’s hockey team reach Olympic semi-final for first time

Tokyo: Indian women’s hockey team stunned Australia 1-0 in the quarter-finals to qualify for the first-ever Olympic Games semi-final at the Oi Hockey Stadium North Pitch, here on Monday.

Drag-flicker Gurjit Kaur converted India’s lone penalty corner in the 22nd minute, which proved decisive in the end.
India’s best performance in the Olympics came way back in the 1980 Moscow Games where they finished fourth out of six teams, but the format was different, as there were no knockout games.

The sport was played in a round-robin format in the 1980 Moscow Olympics with top two teams qualifying for the final

The Rani Rampal-led side will play Argentina in the semifinal on Wednesday. Argentina defeated Germany 3-0 in the first semifinal.
