Odisha reports 11,099 nCoV cases, 21 deaths in a single day

Bhubaneswar:For the sixth time in May, the Covid cases one-day tally in Odisha crossed the 11,000-mark, with 11,099 people testing positive for the virus in the past 24 hours.

With the fresh infections, the Covid tally in the state surged to 6,44,401.

The state reported 21 more deaths pushing the Covid fatalities in the state to 2378 while with the recovery of 10,242 people on Tuesday, the total recoveries rose to 5,36,595.

The active cases in the state remained over one lakh mark for the seventh consecutive day today. The active cases now stood at 1,05,375.

Health and family Welfare department sources said in the past 24 hours, 6214 people from the quarantine centres and 4885 from the local contact tested Covid positive.

Khordha district registered the highest number of 1460 cases, followed by Sundargarh (983), Cuttack(867), Angul ( 552) and Sambalpur ( 547).

Out of 21 people who succumbed to the virus on Tuesday, three died in Kalahandi district, two each in Sambalpur, Sundargarh, Khordha, Koraput and Mayurbhanj district while one each died in eight other districts.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, who reviewed the Covid situation with senior officials in the state on Tuesday, said the COVID-19 situation in Odisha is under control.

Mr Patnaik said since last one week, the positive cases are declining in many districts and the recovery cases are found more than positive cases.

He directed the District Magistrates to ensure the door-to-door survey of the health status of the people in their areas. The government has announced to undertake a three-month house-to-house survey of health status of the people from May 24 next.

Additional Chief Secretary ( Health) P K Mohapatra said the daily testing capacity will be enhanced to 70,000 in the next week.

He claimed that the death rate in the state has reduced from 0.40 to 0.37 per cent while in the last fortnight it is 0.16 per cent which is the lowest in the country. The positive rate , he said, has also declined from 21 per cent to 18 per cent.

State DGP Abhaya said so far, 868 tankers carrying 15912 MT of liquid medical oxygen have been transported to other states with police escort.

ADG ( Fire Services) M Akhaya stated that fire service personnel have been deployed in 62 Covid hospitals in the state.

Meanwhile, after the Berhampur Municipality Corporation( Be MC) the Cuttack Municipality Corporation (CMC) has decided to provide vaccination at the door step for the senior citizens.

The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation and the Cuttack Municipal corporation have also started Covid testing at the door step for the senior citizens in their respective areas.
