Similipal forest area & adjoining places comprising 5,569 sq km in 22nd june 1994 declared a Biosphere reserved area by the GOVT of India which is the abode of 94 species if orchids & about 3thousand species of plants. Even identified species of fauna include 12 species of amphibians, 264 species of birds, 29 species of reptiles & 42 species of Mammals. This very combination shows the biodiversity richness of Similipal which is having 399 fire points according to Regional Conservator of Similipal. According to him, a fire which started in the biosphere reserve area in February & lasted for a week was finally controlled. Since some days of the last month, though the reserve area is with fire, first of all central minister Dharmendra Pradhan took notice of it & requested the CM of Odisha Mr Naveen Pattnaik & the forest minister at center Mr Praksh Javdekar. Soon after that, both of them took notice of the same & fire has been controlled. Here one thing should be remembered that there are several causes for forest fire. Those are collection of mahula flower, poachers before hunting, & burning patches of Sal trees by the local people which are manmade factors. To minimized it in the future, the forest department form squad in 21 ranges where 1thousand personnel & 250 forest guards rest into action & 40 fire tenders & 240 blower machines are there to contain the blaze. The important point is that, forest department & especially Similipal authorities should be cautious enough to give an immediate check mate to fire which can be possible by clearing dried leaves, & crackdown onpoachers, in order to keep the flora & fauna of Similipal biosphere area.
