Tagore- a doctor during Spanish flu, could have re-emerged now

New Delhi, What could be a more fitting and ‘connected’ tribute to Rabindranath Tagore on Friday, the 79th death anniversary of the ‘Bard of Bengal,’ during the shadow of Covid-19 than ‘discovering’ him as also a doctor? Legends and multitasking is synonymous among stalwarts like Tagore, Satyajit Ray- but at times the range of a genius is unbelievable. Documents found in connection with Tagore’s day of demise revealed that Tagore excelled also as a doctor during the period of the Spanish flu.According to reports, the Nobel Laureate had treated his students of fever in his gurukul school at Santiniketan in then West Bengal. Some experts are of the view that the Renaissance man, deeply invested in science and other knowledges, would have marvelled at the advances made by medicine during also the time of Covid-19. The 1918 Spanish flu claimed an estimated 12-17 million lives in India and between 50 million and 100 million globally.
