Islamabad, The Islam?abad High Court (IHC) has appointed three lawyers as amici curiae in the Kulbhushan Jad?hav case and asked Attorney General of Pakistan to seek a response from the Indian government and Jadhav regarding appointment of a counsel for his defence. Dawn quoted the IHC division bench comprising Chief Justice Athar Minallah and Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb warning people against issuing unnecessary statements in this case saying “Everyone must keep in mind right to fair trial while issuing statement related to Jadhav”. The court order announced the appointment of Abid Hassan Manto, Hamid Khan, both senior advocates of Pakistan Supreme Court and Mr Makhdoom Ali Khan, former Att?orney General of Pakistan as amici curiae for legal assistance and for ensuring that the judgement of the Inter?national Court of Justice (ICJ) is effectively implemented. Attorney General Khalid Jawed Khan has given an undertaking that his office would issue advice to the government in this case. He said the Pakistan government is committed to giving a fair trial to the accused “despite the fact that Jadhav had confessed to and convicted of committing heinous crimes of espionage and terrorism in Pakistan”. Khan said the Pakistan government did not execute Jadhav as it complied with the stay order issued by the ICJ. He said the stay order would remain intact till the time a petition from or on behalf of Jadhav was filed before the IHC. Pakistan government alleges that Kulbhushan Jadhav is an Indian spy who entered Pak?istan on March 3, 2016, and was arrested by the Pakistani authorities during a counter-intelligence ope?ration in Mashkel, Balochistan. He was awarded death sentence by a military court in April 2017.
