SC defers Bhushan’s 2009 contempt case hearing


New Delhi, Supreme Court on Thursday deferred the hearing on 2009 contempt case against noted activist lawyer Prashant Bhushan to October 12 and requested the Attorney General (AG) K K Venugopal to appear before it on that day to assist the court in hearing and deciding the case.A three-Judge Bench, headed by Justice AM Khanwilkar, hearing the contempt case against Mr Bhushan, accepted his plea to seek assistance of Attorney General Venugopal.The case was earlier heard by a bench led by Justice Arun Mishra, who is now retired.The Apex Court had in November 2009 issued a contempt notices to Bhushan and Tarun Tejpal, the then Editor-in-Chief of Tehalka Magazine, for allegedly casting aspersions on some sitting and former top court judges in an interview to the news magazine.The Apex Court is also examining many larger issues as to when a person can raise allegations against the judiciary or is he allowed to go to the Press.The Court will now take up the matter again on October 12.
