Tobacco chewing or smoking is undoubtedly injurious to health. More tobacco, more pain & more possibility to invite disease like Asthma, Cancer, Blood pressure & so many other critical diseases which makes a human being unfit for life all togather. Each year many people die due to habitual smoking which became a topic for the World to think upon. Even to control the problem, the World Health Organization made a frame work to restrict tobacco which has been adopted before 17yrs in Geneva. Also India is a signatory to this which came into force on 27th February 2005 here. Recently GOVT of India drafts law to raise legal age of smoking & tobacco chewing from current 18 yrs to 21yrs. For this the centre has prepared a bill to amend the previous law which has been piloted by the union health ministry. There, it has been clearly mentioned, no person shall sale, offer for sale or permit sale of cigarettes or any other tobacco product. to any person who is below the age of 21 yrs & in an area within a radios of one hundred meters of any educational institution. Also the provision to take action against manufacturer & seller of illicit products of the same, in section 7 of the bill, where contravention of the same will lead to imprisonment of 2 yrs or fine up to 1lakh & second time conviction leads to prison for 5 yrs or fine up to 5lakh. So far manufacturers, traders, distributors & businessman are concerned punishment is right. But for a common man how this provision of the bill can give positive result should be re-examined by the Centre. No doubt this bill once became a law, will help India & its citizens, more ever young mass to restrict themselves from tobacco chewing & smoking which ultimately help the country to keep people healthy. It is needless to tell “Health is Wealth”.
