Curfew in Kashmir as precautionary measure

Srinagar, Strict curfew restrictions have been imposed on Tuesday in the Kashmir valley, including summer capital, Srinagar, to maintain law and order following intelligence inputs suggesting that separatists and Pak sponsored groups are planning to observe August 5,2020 as black day, officials said. District Magistrates (DMs) of almost all districts in the Kashmir valley have ordered imposition of restrictions for two days from today to prevent protests and other rallies on the first anniversary of scrapping of Article 370 and dividing the J&K into two Union Territories (UTs) on August 5, 2019. The mainstream political parties have announced to observe it as black day while some have decided to hold rallies against the Centre’s decision alleging it was illegal and unconstitutional. However, the BJP decided to celebrate the day by organizing functions in the valley. Additional security forces and police personnel have been deployed to strictly impose the restrictions. In summer capital of the UT, all main roads have been closed and only those having fresh valid curfew pass issued by the DM are being allowed to move. The earlier COVID-19 passes issued by the DM, including to media persons, were not being treated as valid today. ”We have strict instructions that only those having fresh curfew passes and medical emergency should be allowed to move”, security force personnel told a group of mediapersons in the downtown, where all roads have been sealed since early this morning. A large number of security force and state police personnel have been deployed in the entire downtown and outskirts to prevent any law and order problem. All roads leading to historic Jamia Masjid, stronghold of moderate Hurriyat Conference (HC) chairman Mirwaiz Moulvi Omar Farooq, were closed with barbed wire.
