Dhankhar, Mamata pay homage on Quit India’s 78th anniversary

Kolkata, Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today paid homage on the 78th anniversary of the ‘Quit India’ movement.
‘While remembering millions of freedom fighters, who sacrificed for Independence, on 78th anniversary of #QuitIndiaMovement, let us pledge to ensure democracy flourishes,’ Mr Dhankhar tweeted. ‘All efforts be made to salvage and restore Freedom and Democracy @MamataOfficial,’ the governor said.
Ms Banerjee said, ‘On the 78th anniversary of the Quit India Movement, my homage to all those who took part in the freedom movement. Let us not forget, the freedom struggle was the biggest ever movement ever in the history of India.’ On August eight, 1942, Gandhiji gave a call for the ‘Quit India’ movement to the Britishers during the All India Congress Committee session in then Bombay. The next day he, along with Jawaharlal Nehru and other leaders of the Indian National Congress, were arrested by the British government. Disorderly and non-violent demonstrations across the country were the hallmark of the movement.
