New Delhi, DMK leader TKS Elangovan on Sunday that the Farmers’ and Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill, 2020 and Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill, 2020, will make the farmers slaves.Participating in the debate in Rajya Sabha, he said, “Farmers who contribute at least 20 per cent to the total GDP of the country, will be made slaves by these bills. It will kill the farmers and make them a commodity.”He also said that these bills are an insult to farmers and would not help the helps instead make them a commodity.Trinamool Congress’ Derek O’ Brien sought to know how many BJP MPs had gained a thorough understanding of these two bills. He also demanded to send these bills to select committee for their more scrutinization.Sharing his views on the bills, he said, “How qualified is TMC to speak on the bills? Seven years ago during the land acquisition bill, we spoke in favour of the farmers. Later the Supreme Court said that the rights of the farmers cannot be overlooked. In my state, premium is paid by the state. How qualified are you to speak on the bills?””The PM said opposition is trying to mislead the farmers. You promised to double the farmers’ income by 2020. At current rates, it won’t happen before 2028. Your credibility is low to make promises,” he said.In Bengal, “farmers’ income has not doubled but tripled from Rs 90,000. Don’t bring the debate down to MSPs, we are opposing everything in the bill. It does not give Centre the rights to implement in the states. States will not be able to ensure farmers’ interests. Who are you going to fool here?,” the TMC lawmaker added.”For the consumers too, what is the protection? These bills will have to be discussed and debated. We are the only country in the world who doesn’t need to discuss bills before passing it. This is a dangerous trend that we are following. Select Committee is not to break but contribute. How many BJP MPs have read these two bills?,” Mr O’ Brien said.Samajwadi Party MP from Uttar Pradesh Ram Gopal Yadav said, “It appears that there is a compulsion that the ruling party doesn’t want a debate or discussion on these bills. They are only rushing through these bills. You have not even consulted any farmer associations. You did not consult anyone before bringing these ordinances amid the pandemic.””No son of a farmer will prepare such a bill. Like BSNL is being suffocated by Jio, now farmers too will have to go through the same ordeal. How will farmers compete with big companies,” he added.AIADMK MP SR Balasubramoniyam said that the Farm bills are like disinvestment in Indian farming sector providing entry of big corporates in farming sector while state governments will be reduced to a mute spectator.
