Chennai, Four Tamil Nadu fishermen were arrested
by the Sri Lankan Navy personnel for fishing in the Lankan waters
early on Sunday morning. Reports received here said the fishermen, who ventured into
the sea yesterday in a mechanised, were arrested on charges
of crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line in
the high seas. The arrested fishermen were identified as boat owner Constan
(42), K Ramesh (34), Pandu (50)–all from Kottaipattinam coastal
village–and N Mohan of Pamban near Rameswaram. The arrested fishermen were taken to the Kankesanthurai naval
base for further inquiry. The arrest of four fishermen comes close on the heels of arrest of 36 fishermen last week by the Lankan Navy, which
was condemned by various political parties, who urged the
Centre to take steps to secure their release.
