Huge Cache Of Stolen Silver Articles Seized

Cuttack: In a breakthrough for the Commissionerate Police, five persons were arrested for their alleged involvement in a jewellery shop robbery case in Odisha’s Cuttack city and a huge quantity of stolen silver articles and gold ornaments were seized today.

The police seized a total of 25.5 kg of silver articles and 385 grams of gold jewellery from the possession of the five accused. Also, gas cutter, gas cylinder, crow bars, white colour Chevrolet car, two two-wheelers, four mobile phones and Rs 12,400 cash were recovered.

A written complaint was filed by one Dayanidhi Sahoo of Baikunthabihar village under Jagatpur police limits in Cuttack district on December 5, 2020 alleging that some miscreants broke open the back side wall of his jewellery shop, Basanti Durga jewellery shop at IB road late night on previous day.

The complaint further stated the miscreants looted 35 to 45 kg of silver articles, 300-400 grams of gold jewellery and Rs 50,000-60,000 cash from his shop. They also took away CCTV hard disk, some valuable documents and pen drive.

DCP, Cuttack, Prateek Singh said during the course of investigation on basis of Dayanidhi’s written complaint, the police apprehended Tapan Kumar Sethi from Anantapur village in Jagatsinghpur district. Upon questioning Tapan Kumar confessed committing burglary at Basanti Durga Jewellery shop at IB road on January 4, 2021 night along with three other associates.

After committing the crime, the accused distributed some silver ornaments among themselves and sold the rest gold and silver articles to one Prafulla Kumar Sahoo, owner of Nisamani Jewelers located at Haripur Road in Cuttack, the DCP stated.

On interrogation jewellery shop keeper Prafulla Kumar confessed that he had received stolen silver and gold ornaments from Tapan Kumar. The stolen silver and gold ornaments were also recovered from the jewellery shop of Prafulla Kumar.

Also, searches were carried out houses of the accused and stolen silver ornaments were recovered, the DCP stated.

The accused are Babu alias Tapan Kumar Sethi of Anantapur village in Jagatsinghpur, Babi alias Amulya Kumar Mohanty from OTM Colony in Cuttack, Munna alias Ramesh Chandra Sethy of Ichhapur in Cuttack, Kuna alias Trilochan Sethi from Nilakanthanagar Balitotasahi under Nayapalli police station in Khordha and Prafulla Kumar Sahoo from Nayabazar AG Colony in Cuttack.

A case Jagatpur PS Case No-507 dtd-05.12.2020 u/s-457/380 IPC has been registered. Following their arrest, the accused were forwarded to the court.
