LOSS COUNTS

Electricity loss was neither small in the past nor it has been reduced at present throughout the country. Moreever, in Odisha, the loss is paramount. When the yearly loss in the whole country is within 30 percent at best; with 38.2 percent, Odisha is on ahead of the loss list. Since 4 decades many companies were there in the state to distribute electricity in a disciplined manner and so far, experience proved the method of collection, negotiation between the energy department and distributing companies along with different typical ways to function failed. In 21st century as the loss has not been gone down. Rather this is the real headache with which OERC is pondering over. Without any hesitation after going through the electricity loss anyone can presume, nothing has been done yet to come out of the clutch of the same loss. Statistics shows in the way of distribution, the loss amount is 32 percent. On 2013-14, the total loss in four distributing companies was around 35.88 percent. On 2016-17, this rose to 39.39 percent only. If we looked into the loss of different companies in different circles; the condition is never conducive. WESCO loss in 2017-18 amounts to 54.7 percent. Only in Rourkela circle it is 26 percent whereas circle consisting Bolangir, Sonepur and Titilagarh is with a loss of 65 percent and Baragarh circle leads the show by 74 percent. Since 40 years the state is selling electricity as the production is going here. The pity is that all along those years the loss in distribution and collection graph is going up and up. In the past NESCO’s loss in 2017-18 of 6 circles was 40 percent whereas SOUTHCO loss in 6 circles was more than 50 percent. The same thing repeated with CESU and now 5 circles has been managed by Tata Power since 1st june 2020. If loss is a must, then government should analyze more to reduce it. Otherwise only by tender bidding process whosoever comes with a company the loss will not be reduced without definite plan and programme to change the whole scenario.
