Odisha reports 11,108 new covid cases, 26 deaths in a single day


Bhubaneswar: For the fourth consecutive day the daily covid infection cases in Odisha remained over 11,000 notwithstanding the lockdown imposed in the state since May 5 and weekend shut down. Health and family Welfare department sources said in the past 24 hours,11,108 new cases were reported from all the 30 districts which included 6219 from the quarantine centres and 4889 local contact cases.


During the period 26 people succumbed to the virus while undergoing treatment at various hospitals taking the covid fatalities in the state to 2456. Sources said although the daily covid positive cases have shown a dip in the number from 12,253 on May 20 to 11,108 on May 21, health experts are much worried about the daily caseload surpassing 11 k.
During the last 20 days, the covid positive cases have witnessed over 11,000 mark on eight occasions and have never dipped to below 10,000 mark since May 5, the day the lockdown was imposed in the state barring on May 10 last when the daily caseload declined to 9793.
In the past 24 hours Khordha district reported a maximum number of 1451 cases followed by Cuttack (944),Angul ( 864),Sundargarh ( 708) ,Mayurbhanj ( 635) and Balasore ( 509 ). Except Kalahandi district which registered only 39 positive cases, the other 29 districts have reported over 100 new cases in the past 24 hours.


At the same time, 26 covid patients succumbed to the virus in the past 24 hours from eleven districts.They included a record ix from Khordha district followed by three each in Ganjam and Puri districts, two each from Angul, Sundargarh and Balasore while one each died in four other
districts. During May till date the covid tally has crossed two lakh mark while the covid toll surpassed 400 mark and the 1,81,132 have been recovered from the virus. The Odisha cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Friday approved a proposal including the terms of Global Tender documents in respect of procurement of vaccines for Covid-19 pandemic. Official sources said till May 21 last about 69,19,986 people above the age group of 45 and 2,65,195 people in the age group of 18 years to 44 years have been vaccinated.
