Bhubaneswar: Odisha today reported a further spike of covid positive cases with a record 4761 people found infected from all the 30 districts in the past 24 hours.
For the first time during the year, five covid patients under treatment succumbed to the virus taking the total fatalities in the state to 1953.
While three of them died in Nuapada district, one each lost life in Keonjhar and Rayagada district.
Health and Family Welfare Department sources said in the past 24 hours 2785 covid positive cases were reported from quarantine centres and 1976 as local contact cases taking the total covid tally in the state to 3,77,464 till date.
Khordha district registered the maximum number of 820 new cases in the past 24 hours followed by Sundargarh (673), Nuapada ( 534), Bolangir( 322), Jharsuguda( 234), Bargarh (198), Puri (193) and Sambalpur (183).
Khordha district has so far reported the highest number of 59,337 covid positive cases followed by Cuttack (31,318), Ganjam (22,260), Sundargarh ( 22,112) and Puri ( 15,940).
Similarly, in the case of fatalities, five districts have registered over a hundred deaths. Khordha has topped the list with 341 deaths followed by Ganjam (241), Sundargarh ( 177), Cuttack (142) and Puri (119).
In view of a record rise of covid cases in the second phase of the virus, the state government has declared night curfew in all the 30 districts and clamped weekend shut down in all the urban areas in the entire state.
The state government has appointed senior IAS officers in charge of the district worst hit by the coronavirus to monitor the situation regularly and take appropriate measures to contain the spread of the virus.
Meanwhile, the Odisha Cricket Association ( OCA) has postponed the prestigious “Kalahandi Cup” which was scheduled for April 2021 in view of the current situation of the COVID-19.
The tournament will be back in action when the situation improved, OCA sources said.
