Oxygen supply disrupted in Tripura Covid hospital late night

Agartala, In the midst of the Central team’s visit to investigate the sudden spurt of Covid death in Tripura, oxygen supply in the only Covid hospital of the state was disrupted late night yesterday raising an alarm to save over 200 under treatment patients.Hospital sources said around 2300 hrs on duty doctors noticed patients admitted in a particular block in the Covid treatment centre were struggling with respiratory problem and reported the matter to the authority but there was nobody to intervene till 0100 hrs.Meantime, getting the information of crisis from a patient party, former health minister and BJP MLA Sudip Roybarman had gone there with a bio-medical engineer and repaired the oxygen supply line after more than an hour.Roybarman said, “Around 0030 hrs I got a distressed call from an unknown number whose father has been in the ICU after getting infected with Covid. I heard the howling of several others who were seeking help to survive their patients. Immediately, I rushed to the hospital and sent a vehicle to Ratul Deb, the only qualified biomedical engineer of our state, who happened to be a leader of state BJP, to bring him and around 0200 hrs the oxygen flow was restored.”Ratul onn several occasions for the past 12 years had helped the state health department in critical moments, as the department could not appoint any qualified biomedical engineer as of now. He was the first person who had identified the leakages and blockades in oxygen supply chain in Covid ICUs on August 7 last and free of cost he repaired it several times but the department is yet to take appropriate steps to resolve the critical issue, Roybarman told media persons. Allegedly, most of the people in Covid hospital died due to lack of oxygen in last four months. A large number of ventilators donated by Centre and other organizations have not been installed yet due to low oxygen pressure and all the top level officials and policy makers knew it, Roybarman stated adding none of them took step to put the life saving system in place that caused death of 182 people so far.He rued since beginning whatever suggestions the doctors had given, top officials surprisingly turned them down resulting in today’s situation ? people have been dying in the hospital without proper care and service and added, “I personally, wanted to talk to Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb who is also holding the health portfolio. But neither did he pick up my calls nor contacted later, which pained me a lot. And, I believe had he spoken to me and listened to my words at least such a large number of people would have not died.”Meanwhile, ministry of health and family welfare has deputed two expert doctors Dr Daisy Panna, Consultant Epidemiologist, National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and Dr P K Verma, Assistant Prof Respiratory Medicine, Lady Hardinge Memorial College (LHMC) for 10 days to review the Covid management and suggest the government to arrest the death cases. Yesterday the high court of Tripura served notice to state on mismanagement in Covid care.
