Police Excess: 5 More Accused Hospitalized In Critical Condition In Odisha

Puri:  At a time when the two custodial deaths in Sundargarh and Puri have triggered a huge outcry in the state, five more accused in Puri district have been hospitalized in critical condition after being subjected to police excess. Sources said Pipili police had arrested six persons and gave them third degree torture for around seven days in the custody. The arrested are Pratap Behera, Hafiz Khan, Jagannath Puspalak, Mohammad Tafiq, Dharanidhar Behera and Arjun Behera. Except Arjun, all five accused suffered grievous injuries in the police excess. On Thursday night, the cops produced all of them before court, from where they were sent to Nimapada jail. Seeing critical condition of the five of accused, authorities of Nimapara jail refused to keep them in the jail without medical examination. Later on Friday morning, the cops admitted the five critically-injured accused to Nimapada hospital, where the authorities referred them to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack. Currently, condition of all the five accused is stated to be critical. As per information, Pipili police had arrested the six accused on November 13 in connection with an attack on one police informer Sajid Hussain, who had helped the Pipili police bust a brown sugar smuggling racket. On the other hand, Pipili SDPO has refuted the allegation of police excess and said the accused are undergoing treatment since they were ill.
